Movie Poster for Michael Moore's Sicko
After taking on GM, the war against terror and the NRA, Moore now turns to the health “care” system in the U.S. in his latest film, Sicko.

I won’t lie to you. I get so wound up whenever I think of how immoral and horribly broken the U.S. health “care” system is, it’s hard for me to remain rational. Blind rage might be one way to describe how I feel. But it seems pretty obvious to me that it is simply wrong for the fate of anyone’s health to rest in the hands of for-profit companies who can only survive by denying people care. Blue Cross and Blue Shield or Kaiser or Cigna or any of the countless others like them can’t survive unless they’re making a profit… and they can’t make a profit unless they deny people the care they need. Madness. Truly the lunatics are running the asylum.

My uncle spent his entire adult life dutifully writing checks for tens of thousands of dollars in monthly payments to his health care company. When the day came that he actually needed to call in their help — he got cancer — the company decided that would cost way, way too much money and hurt their bottom line. So they dropped him. No lie. End result: my uncle died. Needless to say I’m a bit breathless in anticipation of seeing Moore’s film and plan on bitching about it for weeks after, much to the weary disappointment of anyone who has to live or work with me.

One of the things you can always count on with Moore’s work is there will be legions of critics who complain that he manipulates the facts, misleads viewers or flat out lies to push his agenda. NPR decided to fact check Sicko and has this analysis with film critic Bob Mondello and Health Care reporter Joanne Silberner.
